After having finished the lyceum Stepan Karelin studied jurisprudence at the russian university. At the same time he got singing lessons with the russian singer Walerij Radtschenko. Under his guidance he won in 2003 the third prize of the international Competition "ÕÕI Musik Centry Art" in Vorzel' (Ukraine). Thereafter he moved to Moscow where he studied at the Tschaikowsky Conservatory with Viktor Gorjatschkin. In 2007 the conductor and artistic director Alla Kopatschinskaja invited him to participate in the production of „Dido and Aeneas“ at the musical theatre „Orfej“(Moscow). After three years of study he went to Graz (Austria), where he was accepted at the University of art in the class of Univ.Prof. Mag. Ioanna Borowska-Isser and he is still studying with her until now.
Karelin is now busy singing concerts. He is regularely partaking in concerts of operetta organized from Mag. Margarete Vogler-Kieser(Netherlands-Austria). Karelin sang concerts in the Russian Ambassy of Vienna. He also was part of the cast in the productions „MUMUTH“, „Die Zauberflöte“ by Mozart, „L'UPUPA“ by Henze, „Das Traumfresserchen“ by Hiller at the Graz Opera as well as in productions of the „Lehár-Festival Bad Ischl.
In 2010 he was winner of the third prize of the International Competition I.Welitschka“(Moscow). In the same year he participated at the American International Competition (AIMS) as the only opera singer from Russia. In 2011 he was Paganinis „Tofolo“ at the Lehár-Festival Bad Ischl. In 2013 he sang a „Wagner Gala Concert“ together with Linda Watson in the „Stefaniensaal“ of Graz. He was finalist in the «Mikhailovsky International Competition 2013» where he won the “Special Prize”. In the same year he was successful in the modern opera „Asteroid 62“ during the «Styria Classiс». In February 2014 he was the soloist in a concert with the city orchestra Lipetsk. And in 2014 follows his debut as Don Prospero in Donizettis „Viva la mamma“.
